CLUNES.
Our local correspondent on .Saturday
writes:—At the police court yesterday, be
fore Messrs J. E. Meyers, N. Nicholson,
and L. M'Lellan, J’s.P., J. W. Sutton, who
was remanded from Ballarat, was charged
with obtaining several sewing machines from
persons in Clunes and Mount Greenock by
means of false pretences, by representing
himself as one of the linn of Wertheim and
Cos. on an inspection tour. These persons
were somewhat in arrears with their pay
ments, and he took away the machines, and
disposed of them to other people. John C.
Muir gave evidence that the prisoner was
not in the employ of the firm of Wertheim
and Cos. Three charges were preferred
against him, Inspector Parkinson prosecuting,
and he was committed to take his trial on
each, at Ballarat, on the 7th October.
The hospital committee met on Wednes
day evening for the purpose of taking steps
for .filling the position of resident surgeon,
now vacant through the death of Dr Col'p
houn, for whom genuine regret was ei
pressed by all present: after due considera
tion it was decided to invite applications for
resident surgeon, returnable on 9th October,
the salary to be £2OO per annum, with hoard
and quarters.
The diamond drill bottomed No. 13 to*
on Thursday at a depth of 233 feet on 2 ted
of mullocky wash. This is the same depth
as last bore, and the country passed throws
of a similar character. No. 14 bore will«
proceeded with immediately.
Matters in connection with the forthcom
ing Hospital fete are progressing very satn
factorily, and the whole of the committees
for the various undertakings connected there
with have now been appointed. On fhurs'-'y
evening a large number of ladies met at
free library, and formed themselves in»
committee for carrying out the bazaar an
refreshment arcade on the usual lines,
town was allotted into districts and a
collectors appointed for each, the grea
enthusiasm being evinced by all presen , -
it is safe to prognosticate that these pr
able auxiliaries will maintain their repota
for adding the most grist to the fnuds o
annual effort of the Cluues Hospital
Association. *
