FIGHTING IN EGYPT
THE TURKS' MARCH.
BOATS DRAWN ON CARS.
REPORTS BY PRISONERS.
From Captain Bean, Australian press
representative with the Australian Imperial
force:—
CAIRO, February 6. ■
The defeat of the Turkish force -which
attempted the raids on the Suez Canal
evidently disheartened the army, for no
fighting of any kind occurred yesterday.
The force which tried to place a bridge
across the canal formed a part of the 2Sth
Division. The men had been marched
from Beersheba, and by way of EI Arish.
They brought with them boats on cars
drawn by oxen and buffalo.
The non-commissioned officers of the Ot
toman 75th Regiment, who surrendered,
told a British officer that six hundred men
of their battalion reached the canal. Then
a well-aimed fire was poured into their
ranks, and before the troops recovered
from the confusion into which they were
thrown they were surrounded.
An officer of the 74th Regiment, who was
taken prisoner, stated that as the Turks
approached the canal the British fiiie fire
became very fierce. Still his men contrived
to lauuch a boat, and nearly crossed in
safety. When near the west bank the
boat, which had been riddled with bullets,
sank, and only four of the occupants
reached the land. They were attacked at
once, and when only one man and himself
were left they surrendered.
An officer, who held the rank of major
in the German army, was killed at Sera
peum. It is said that on his body was found
a small specially-made khaki wallet, con
taining a white flag.
