" TWO GOOD DAYS."
GERMANS NOW RETREATING
LONDON, October 1.
Mr. William Maxwell, the special corre-1
spondent of the "Daily Mail," telegraph-!
ing from France on Sunday, says it is
certain Germany's second great effort has
failed. He adds:—"When an English gene
ral who is incapable of exaggeration says
'We have had two good days,' you may
be sure they have been more than good.
A French officer added that a fort had
been blown up.
Enemy Estreating.
"With certain members of the Head-'
quarters Staff I spent two days in a de
serted chateau. Here the sound of the gun
fire made it evident that the Germans were
retreating. For twelve hours the Germans'
guns to the west have not returned the
fire of the Allies' heavy artillery. Even
the quarries that formed tho bono of con
tention in tho eentro look deserted. It is
rumored that the Germans have evacuated
them owing to tho smell from the nnburied
doad poisoning tho a!r, Bnt they are not
all deserted, for tho French attacked one
series of quarries and farts near Laigne
under cover of a mist and killed the de
fenders like rats in a hale. In another
case tho -Allies set fire to- <t spinney and
under cover of the rising smoke readied a
point commanding the quarry. The enemy
fled, leaving many dead.
Terrific Assaults Repulsed.
*Tt is certain the enemy have been beaten,
along the whole line, despite the reinforce
ments they hnrried np and the despera
tion with which they fought. For two days
they made terrific attacks in overwhelming
numbers, but reinforcements for the
Allies arrived at the critical moment, and,
although charge after charge was deliv
ered until the plain, was strewn with
wounded and dying, the German ranks
were shattered and driven back to their
entrenchments. There were similar bayonet
attacks and counter-attacks along the
whole of the western end of the flank, but
victory always rested with the Allies. The
British and French lost heavily, but the
Red Cross officers state that their dead !
are not nearly so numerous as they had i
expected. There must soon he another re
treat on the part of the enemy to the
es."t and north, but the Germans must hold
their western flank to the very last mo
ment, in order to save the centre."
