THE STATE BANK.
The State Bank, of South Australia,
which has hitherto occupied part of the
Money Order Office in the new wing of
the General Post-Office, will shortly be
located in its own premises in Pirie-street.
"The trustees of the btate Bank have pur
chased the building which was erected by
the Union Bank in the early fifties,( and
which was rented by the W.C.T.U. after
the Union absorbed the Bank of South
Australia and moved into the "white
marble palace" in King William-street.
The directors of the Union Bank have
now sold their original head office to the
State Bank for ..£7,000, and there is no
doubt the latter have made a very good
bargain. The building is of the most sub
stantial character, and is in all essentials
as good as new, while the land has 112 ft.
frontage to Pirie-street and 120 to Pree
man-street. Beckoning the value of the
land at £50 a foot frontage, the total is
£5,600, which leaves only £1,400 as the
sum paid for a building which certainly
could not be erected to-day for less than
£5,000. On the ground floor is the bank
ing hall, 40 x 24 ft., and 32 ft. high; board
room, clerks' offices, " inspector-general's
room, and two strong-rooms. On the first
floor are the eight spacious dwelling
rooms,. formerly occupied by the manager
of the Union Bank, and on the. ground
floor are also kitchen, cellar, pantries, and
three other rooms, which, like those on
the first floor, will not be required by the
State Bank itself, and which can be let by
the trustees. The renovation which is
now proceeding will cost about £300.
The bank officials hope to move into their
spacious new premises during the course
of the present week. The staff comprises
eight clerks in addition to the Inspector
General (Mr. G. S. Wright).
