Conclusion of tlie Inpest.
Tke Accused Discharged,
Melbourne,: May_ 15.
.7 The', enquiry into the death of the old
man, Butler, the victim of the Mansfield
tragedy," "was resunied to-day.,, Evidence
was;- given by a butcher named Murdoch
Campbell to the effect that he leased a
piece of ground to the deceased , and his
daughter, Anastasia • Butler. The. latter
paid the rent regularly until a couple of
years ago. He asked for the- money, and
Anastasia said she "would pay it, but in
stead of doing so she, at the end of March
or the beginning , of April, gave him three
months'. notice'-of her intention to leave.
He asked her "what she was going to - do
with her father. She did not .answer,
but .'walked quickly away. On April 11 he
saw her,: ana she said, "I am done with
the place now, and I will pay your rent
when I am going away ." She did no t seem
to be in her usual spirit's. Tour days later
he met her again, and as she still looked
depressed he asked her what was the mat
ter. She replied, "You will know soon
enough." Several shopkeepers deposed
that Anastasia Butler was in debt to them
for groceries, &c., and one had threatened
her with legal proceedings. This closed the
evidence, and * after the coroner had ad
dressed .the jury, they retired.. After half
any - hour's ."" deliberation'. they found
there 'was not sufficient ' evidence . to .show
by what means the deceased had come by
his death, and added that they thought
Anastasia Butler had some knowledge of
the death of her father prior to the. dis
covery of his body. The coroner intimated
that he could not accept the latter part of
the verdict, amhthe jury eliminated it .from
the finding. The accused, was thendis
