Strike Ends
l?MPLOYEES of Commercial Steel
Pty. Ltd., Lidcombe, at a meeting
on Tuesday decided to return to
work yesterday (Thursday).
They had been on strike for more
than six weeks claiming that two
Ironworkers' Union shop stewards
had been victimised when dismissed
with other men by the company.
The union's case concerning these
two men will be heard by Conciliation
Commissioner Finlay.
The decision was made following
report by union officials of conferences
with the employers and
Arbitration Court discussions on the
dispute.
Application Stood Over
In the Federal Arbitration Court
on Monday Judge O'Mara stood over
an application T5y the company for
an order that the men return to
work.
Failure to comply with such an
order would involve a penalty not.
exceeding £10 a day.
Union officials told the meeting
that at a conference with the company
considerable progress had
been made toward agreement on
methods to be used In any further i
retrenchments.
This agreement included consideration
of seniority, skill and ability,
attendance and punctuality, and the
position of union delegates.
Officials emphasised that protection
of union organisation on the Job had
Deen their main consideration when
negotiating.
The meeting decided to hold a
further stop-work meeting next
Wednesday at Sydney Trades HalL
A full report on the dispute will be
discussed at this meeting.
"Due to the possibility of the
dispute not being satisfactorily
settled we request all delegates
-operating in the various workshops
to continue the campaign for financial
assistance until they are otherwise
notified," a resolution passed by
the men stated.
