MORTALITY AMONG DAIRY COWS.
Serious concern has been caused
among
dairv cow owners in the metropolitan
area by tbe large number of deaths reported
of late.
Prom the description of
the trouble given by tbe owners who have
been FO unfortunate as to lose stock it is
believed that death has been due to plant
poisoning, probablv bv homeria
collina,
commonly called
the Cape tnlip.
When
this plant is eaten in large
quantities,
especially bv cow6 in poor condition, the
effects are invariably fatal, medical treatment
being of no avail. The plant poison
seems to act on tbe nervous system ot the
animal, and in the present outbreak the
owners? of affected cattle report that there
is a discharge of blood from the cow^s
bowel* and death usually takes place in a
few hours.
That the trouble is serious
•will be seen from the fact that F.bout 30
cows have died from this cause durine the
past few weeks.
The officers of the Vete.
rinary
Department are
makmg investigations.
