THE LOSS OF THE FLEET WING.
THE DALRYMPLE BLAMED EOE, THE
MISHAP.
The master of the ketch Eleetwing, in filling
in the Board of Trade return for the informa
tion of the Marine Board, attributes the loss
of his vessel solely to negleot on the part of
the crew of the Dalrymple to carry lights
upon their vessel. He states that his
vessel was carrying sidelights at the time
of the collision, the weather being calm, the
wind blowing from the north-north-west with
moderate force, while the tide was ebbing. If
the vessel i3 totally lost the loss will be £500,
but should she be raised again the loss will
amount to £300. The ship was not insured,
but he was unable to say whether any
insurance had been effected upon the cargo.
In his opinion the casualty was caused
by collision with the Dalrymple, brought
about by that vessel not carrying sidelights.
The casualty might have been avoided by the
Dalrymple carrying sidelights. The Fleet
wing carried two compasses, which were in
good order. She had boats to carry all
persons on board, but she was not
provided with water-tight compartments.
The officer in charge at the time of the colli
sion ranked as mate, but he held a master's
certificate. In answer to the query what wa3
the course of the vessel when the other vessel
was first seen, Captain Leask replied that she
was not seen and that she carried no lights.
A Marine Board enquiry will be held,
probably on Thursday nexr, but the date has
not been fixed.
The regular sailings to Ardrossan will not
be interrupted by the mishap, arrangements
having been made for the ketch Osprey to take
the Fleetwing's place. She will sail every
Wednesday as the Eleetwing did.
The Marine Board has issued a notice to
mariners as follows:—"Notice is hereby given
that the ketch Eleetwing has suDk in G
fathoms water L. W.>S. with the Port Adelaide
lighthouse bearing E. by S., distance 3-'t
miles. The mainmast head is above water,
and the wreck is marked by day with a red
flag and by night with a white light exhibited
from the top masthead about 20 ft. above
water."
