ON A RAILWAY STATION.
A MELBA YARN.
An amusing incident is narrated by the
“Brisbane Courier” in connection with
the demonstration which greeted Madanto
Melba at the Ipswich railway station on
her way to Brisbane. The platform was
crowded, and the people surged round the
carriage window. Melba chatted very
pleasantly with them. A venerable old
man ventured to take her hand, and as
he did so ho spoke to her, and-addressed a.
sermon to those about at the same time:
“I like you, mum,” he frankly hurst out,
"because you’re good to your old father/’
Before the train moved off he asked Melba
would she have something to drink, and
fearing he had offender her, added, "I
mean a bottle of lemonade or something.”
Melba graciously declined, and as the
guard’s shrill whistle sounded tho old fel
low showed he did not entertain animosity
on that account. He waved his hat, and
called, “Good bye, darling,” The diva
was greatly amused; so was the crowd.
