ANOTHER BURGLARY.
CASE AT PARKSIDE.
THE THIEVES DISTURBED.
Following upon the burglary which was
perpetrated at the residence of Mr. F. L.
Clausen, at Malvern, on Sunday, February 25,
the house of Mr. Venables, Greenhill-road,
was forcibly entered last Sunday_ evening.
The circumstances of the two robberies are in
many respects similar. Mr. Venables's house
is situated opposite the Parkaide Lunatic
Asylum, in a secluded spot, and
there is no house adjacent, and no gas
light within ' several hundred yards,
burglar would have excellent opportuni
ties of putting any little scheme
into effect. The place appears to have been
well watched and every preparation was made
for securing a haul. On Suuday evening, at
about a quarter-past 6 o'clock, Mr. and Mrs.
Venables left their house to attend church at
Knox villa and did not return till a quarter to
9. The doors of the house were fastened securely
before they left, but the windows of. the front
room and of oneof the backbedrooms were open.
The night was dark and on returning home
Mr. Venables W9nt to unlock the door. Find
ing it open he sought the assistance of a friend
and a thorough search was made of the house.
Though they could have gained access through
the open windows the thieves prised open the
front door, apparently with a ohisel, arid
smashed the lock. They first turned their
attention to the bedrooms and ransacked a
number of drawers in both Mrs. Venables's
and the servant's apartments, but it is pre
sumed that they were frightened by some noise
and decamped, leaving a number of valuables
untouched. In Mrs. Venables's room 30s. in
cash, a lady's watchchain, a ring, and a locket
were pocketed, while in the servant's room a
silver brooch was missing. The front rooms
were left untouched. It will be seen that the
loss sustained was comparatively trivial, and
it was fortunate for the occupants of the
house that the uninvited visitors were alarmed
and their examination of the premises short.
The detectives have the matter in hand.
