SENSATIONAL DIVORCE SUIT.
A REMARKABLE AFFIDAVIT.
COMPENSATION FOR THE LOSS .OF
A WIFE.
Melbourne, February 23.
A sensational divorce suit was heard
to-day by Mr. Justice Williams on the
petition of Johannes Cornelius de Goey
for a dissolution of marriage with Amy
Elizabeth de Goey on the ground of mis
conduct with Henry Carr, a contractor.
The parties were married on March Id,
1883, and lived happily together until
1887, when Carr was introduced into the
home. On October 12, 1892, the peti
tioner accused his wife of impropriety
with the co-respondent. She confessed
to being unfaithful since 18S7.
An affidavit from the wife of the co
respondent, who had intervened, stated
that the petitioner knew of the intimacy
existing between his wife and the co
respondent, and after Carr had left the
petitioner would demand from his wife
the money which the co-respondent had
given her. The respondent and co
respondent left Melbourne iii October as
man and wife on a trip to Adelaide, and
on their return an arrangement was made
between the parcies wliich was put in
writing as follows :—"Received from H.
Carr the sum of £1,500 as compensation
in full for the loss of my wife and home
and two children, which I thought were
mine, and I will not trouble H. Carr any
more in the future.—J. C. de Goey.'
The affidavit further stated that the
petitioner returned to live with his wife,
and that she was frequently visited by
the co-respondent with the knowledge of
the petitioner.
The parties did not appear.
His Honor said that the contract of
sale proved collusion. The petition was
dismissed.
