THE GLENELG- RAILWAY.
TO THE IBITOB.
Sir—I hope the memorial presentea yesteruay
to His Won hip the Mayor will not be taken as an
indication of the opinion of thoughtful citizens
as to the propriety of allowing the locomotives
entering the city beyond South-terrace, and I
trust that the City Council will not be in
fluenced by it to induce them to alter their de
liberate decision in the matter.
It is a fact that the memorial was hawked
about amongst the greater part,-, if not all the
schools, and in this manner some thousands of
"children's" signatures were obtained. I
know from my own son, who is at Messrs.
Whinham's school, that he was asked to sign
it there, and did so without knowing why;
only, as he said. " he thought it good fun." I
also understand that the seamen and marines
of H.M.S. Pearl signed it in the streets.
Persons were employed to obtain signatures
at £3 a thousand, whioh made it to their in-,
terest to obtain all. they could, but I do not
consider this course at all creditabie to the. Com
pany.
I am, Sir, sc.,
