THE LA.B0UR PARTY.
A MELBOURNE WELCOME TO
VISITING MEMBEBS.
MELBOURNE, May 19.
A public demonstration was held on Saturday
night, under the auspices of the Political
Labour Council of Victoria, for the
purpose of welcoming visiting representatives
of labour parties in the other
States. Mr. M. Hannah, president of the
Trades and Labour Council, was in the
chair, and there were about 300 persons
present. Mr. Tudor, MJP., in the course of
an address of welcome, said in proportion
to its population Victoria had returned the
smallest quota of labour members to the
Federal Parliament. He thought this was
due to a lack of organization. Mr. J. B.
Ronald, M.P., said it was for the labour
party to inaugurate a reign of honesty in
politics. The aim of members of the party
should be to serve the classes they represented
and not themselves. They might
differ on the tariff question, bat when this
matter was settled they would stand shoulder
to shoulder, having one common platform,
and the Ministry that would be prepared
to make the best terms with them
would have their support. If they held the
balance of power they were going to use
it. Senator Dawson (Queensland), in acknowledging
the welcome, said the labour
party in Victoria needed to keep on fighting
for their rights, and the visiting representatives
would give them every assistance.
Senator D. Largie {Western Australia) said
it was in the mining districts that the labour
party wanted organization. Messrs.
C. McDonald (Queensland), Fowler (Western
Australia), R. S. Guthrie {South Australia),
Higgs (Queensland). Pearce (Western
Australia), Stewart (Queensland), and
others also addressed the meeting, mainlv
on the theme that the labour party needed
to make its organization as a fighting machine
effective.
