Nine Roman Catholio teachers out of ten ; is not
a small proportion of papal teachera for one
sohool to pass into the ranks of Publio.School
teachers within five years. At the beginning
of the present Public Instruction system the
papal church held its " faithful " aloof from
the Public Schools in every way ; but after
wards it took a cunning new departure ; and
while denouncing the Public School' system
as bitterly as ever, began to encourage,
and assist with the political influence
it commands, its adherents to become
. teaohers in the Public Schools. The reason
of this, far more subtle scheme of crowding
the Public Schools with teaohers bound to
hdte them by their allegiance to their church,
and to_ act in them as the priesthood com
mand, is obvious to the weakest understand -
ing. "
