THE ODDFELLOWS’ CONFER
ENCE.
The annual movable committee of the Man
chester Unity Independent Order of Odd
fellows continued its sittings at the Hawthorn
Town Hall yestorday; the Grand Mastor (Mr
W. P. Northott) presiding.
The sub-committee appointed at the last
A.M.C. recommended the addition of words to
sub-clause of clause 31 to provide that mis
conduct on the part of a member would
disentitle him to medical attendance as well
as sick pay. The recommendation was
agreed to.
It was decidod to hold the next A.M.C. at
Portland, and the salary of the corresponding
secretary of the Order for the ensuing year
was fixed at the same rate as last year, viz.,
£lOO per annum.
Mr W. Meader, Deputy Grand Master (of
the Yarra Yarra district) wa3 unanimously
elected Grand Master for the ensuing year.
Mr W. Simpson, P.P.G.M. (of the Warr
natnbool district), was unanimously chosen as
Deputy Grand Master, and the following
members were elected as the board of directors
for the ensuing yoar:—Messrs A. Ritchie,
P.P.G.M. (St. Arnaud district), P. H. Roy,
P.P.G.M. (South Melbourne district), John
M’Gibbony, P.P.G.M. (Wimmera district), J.
Stevenson, P.P.G.M. (Ballarat district),. A.
Whitehead, P.P.G.M. (Ovens and Murray dis
trict), John Reid, P.P.G.M. (Castlemaine dis
trict), H. Bosselinann (Bendigo distriot),
Thomas Lord (Corio district), Alfred Hill
(Port Phillip district).
Mr Clande TToodkouse, P.P.G.M. (Colling
wood district), was elected audi'or for threo
years.
Mr J. Hume Cook, M.L.A., and Dr Carty
Salmon, M.L.A., president and vice-president
of the Australian Natives’ Association, were
accommodated with seat3 on the platform and
cordially welcom-d by the president.
Mr Hume Cook add that he was much
gratified to hear from the Grand Master that
the members of the order were ardent federa
tion's, and he hoped they would all lend a
hand in selecting the right kind nf men to do
the right kind of work in the right way at the
F.'doral Convention.
Dr Carty Salmon also responded briefly.
' Mr W. Bronghall, P.G.M., was elected a
trustee of the order and of the almshouses pro
perty, vice Mr S. H. Clark, doceased.
The board nf directors recommended tho
A.M.C. to consider the propriety or other
wise of rendering pecuniary assistance to
lodges in the Castlemaine and Talbot districts
direct from the unity siok and funeral
fnnds, subject to certain conditions. After
some debate, Mr Arthur Whitehead (Ovens
and Murray district) moved that a levy
of 3d per member be struck on the sick
and funeral fund of the order for the pur
pose of relieving di-tricts tho funds of whoso
lodges are impoverished. Mr Ivor J. Wil
liams seconded the proposal.
In reply to a question by tho Grand Master,
Mr Brouehall stated that a member had
drawn £lOOO in sick pay during a period of
years. This member lived in Germany, and
had not roceivod any money since June last.
The motion in favor of striking a levy was
carried.
