TIIE BUDGET.
The Times reports the budget with a tone of ap- !
proval, and it may now congratulate the British
public on being once more on the same pleasant
slope of financial reduction as in the days of Peel.
The Post thinks the budget will satisfy the public,
and astonish the Opposition in the House of Com
mons.
The Herald says Mr Gladstone was evidently
taken by surprise; and it admits that taking the
budget as a whole, it is creditable to the tact, talent,
industry, and readiness of the Chancellor of the
Exchequer.
The Daily Sews does not agree with the Chancellor
on sugar and tea duties.
