ADELAIDE,
SATURDAY, MAY 10, 1851.
The arrival last evening was the Maid of
Erin from Hobarton. with three passen
gers, and dates to the 27th of April. There
is little or no change in the markets, and
no news of any kind whatever.
It was currently reported in town yester
day, after the arrival of the Maid of Erin,
that Sir John Franklin was safe, and had
been spoken with on his way homeward,
rounding Cape Horn, after having made
the North-West Passage. This we at first
thought nothing more than the reproduc
tion of the story, first copied into this
journal some weeks ago, from one of the
Indian papers, and which afterwards went
the Tound of the Adelaide press, but at a
late hour last evening, pur shipping re
porter furnished us with the following ac
count of the matter, which we give just as
we received it:—.
: Since forwarding my report in the mail bag, I
have seen the captain of the Maid of Erin, who
says, that 011 leaving Hobart Town, the owners
came on board, and said to him, " You may report
as news, iii Adelaide, that Sir John Franklin is
safe* A vessel arrived this morning from Califor
nia, and brings word that Sir John had been
spoken with going round Cape Horn, by two ves
sels, and that he was homeward bound, having
made the North-West Passage."
Captain Cobham of the Matd of Erin assures me
that this may be relied npon, and that Captain
Nicholls of the brig Union, which was to leave
Hobart Town for this port two days after the Maid
of Erin, will authenticate it on his arrival here.
The news, we fenr, is too good to be
true, but we must leave our readers to
draw their own conclusions.
