Curb Urged on
U.S. Inflation
WASHINGTON, April 18.
President Truman, addressing the an
nual convention of the American Society
of Newspaper Editors, gave a warning that
unless Congress acted swiftly to curb in
flation, the nation would face ever-increas
ing danger of. a depression. .
The President said: "Infla
tion is getting steadily worse
and undermining the United
States economy.
A strong American economy
is the bedrock on which rest
the hopes for establishing
world peace.
"Without it. we cannot pro
vide cither aid, leadership
or an example."-
Pointing out that," despite ,
February's break, in grain '
prices, the general price level
still continued to soar, Presi
dent Truman appealed again
for the eriactment of the 10-
point anti-Inflation programme
which he'ptoposed ,to Congress
in November:
The programme includes
stand-by controls over prices
and wages, a stand-by ration
ing system, curbs on credit and
other measures to hold down
prices and conserve iscarce
goods.
Mr. Truman added: "We
are striving io avoid an
economic crisis by protect
ing our prosperity while we
still have It. '
"We are (Striving t oavoid a
war crisis- by being firm before
it is too late. The. effective
ness of . our foreign policy and
the strength of our defences
all depend on this prosperity."
