AUSTRALIA DAY.
Is it a coincidence or a whim
of the Postmaster-General's
department that the telephone
number allotted to the secre-
tary of the Australia Day
Council (Mr. C. W. Quihamp-
ton) is JX1788 ?
That is the year the people
of this country will celebrate
on Monday, January 26, as
Australia day, to commemo-
rate the landing of the first
settlers under Governor Phil-
lip at Sydney Cove.
The Victorian Government
has granted £500 to the Aus-
tralia Day Council to help de-
fray the cost of fittingly cele-
brating the anniversary this
year — a cause which lack of
funds in the past has prevent-
ed the council from doing.
This grant will now help the
council to expand into sub-
committees which will deal
adequately with specific fea-
tures of the national celebra
tion.
Fire fighting methods and
equipment used by the Forests
Commission in combating
forest fires will be reviewed by
the Minister for Forests (Mr.
Dennett), at a display by the
Forests Commission at Mt.
Disappointment forest, eight
miles from Broadford, on Fri-
day.
