FOOTSCRAY TRAM
ROUTE
Threat- of Stoppage
Employes on the Footscray
tram route will cease work on
Wednesday, Arizac day, unless a
special executive meeting of the
Tramway Employes' Association.
is arranged and decides against;
such action. At its last meeting
the executive adopted a motion'
instructing the 38 drivers and; 22
conductors on that route to stop
work unless the Tramways Board
fulfilled its promise, to provide
more employes to operate two-
man instead of one-man 'units.
At present there are 16 conduc
tors fewer tnan- drivers.'
When the board considered the
demand, it decided to.stop all ne-'
gotiations agreed to! after consul
tations with Judge Drake Brock-!
man with the association, unless
an assiirance was given that sec
tion' threats of stop-work and the
pin-pricking actions were aban
doned.
In a letter received by the sec
retary of the association (Mr. Ab-
falter) yesterday, the board ex
plained that, of 96 additional per
sonnel promised by the Manpower
Directorate last September, there
were still 16 or 18 short. As a
result, two-man units could not
be, fully restored to Footscray.
The four welfare officers ap
pointed recently, would deal with
the difficulties of conductresses
which were responsible for: ab
senteeism. The decrease in ab
senteeism would warrant the ap
pointment of such officers.
In view of the board's reply,
it is likely that the association
executive, at its usual meeting
on Monday night ; next, ' will re
ceive a notice of motion to re
scind its former decision and call
a special meeting immediately to
cunsiaer it, ,
