Women in R.A.N.
Mine Depots
The Women's Employment
Board granted an application . by
the. Minister of the Navy yester-.
day for permission to ; employ
women in R.A.N, mine depots
throuchout Australia In the as-
sembly, overhaul, maintenance
and storage of mines, depth
charges and components. Only
11 women have been engaged in
this work since January 14 last,
but it was stated in , the decision
given by the chairman (Judge
Foster) that the estimated total
would be 80.
It< was explained that their
work would be similar in char
acter.. to that undertaken in
munition and engineering estab
lishments by process workers and
other metal trades classifications.
Adults would receive, during a
probationary period of four
weeks, 66.6 per cent, of the male
rate, plus a special allowance,
and after that 90 per cent, of
the male annual rate of salary,
plus 1/ a day allowance. Juniors
would be paid 100 per cent, of
the Junior male rates.
