WASHINGTON, May 5 (A.A.P.)
Further notable success for
American submarines in the Pa
cific and Far East is disclosed In
a communique Just Issued. The
following results are shown:—
.Sunk. — Two destroyers, one
medium-sized tanker, a medium-
sized cargo ship, a medium-sized
supply ship and - a medium-sized
transport. ' .
Probably Sunk.— A large trans
port.
These actions .have not been
announced previously. -
Additional details - have been
made . available of . the ' sur
face engagement between a light
United States patrol! force and-a
Japanese force . westward of Attu
Island on March "26.
The United States force of one
heavy cruiser, one' light cruiser
and four destroyers - was ' patrol
ling in the area south-east ot
Komandorski Island, when they
contacted the enemy shortly after
dawn. " The Japanese force, com
posed of two heavy cruisers, two
light- cruisers, six destroyers and
two -transports, was headed east
ward toward the Aleutians. Fir
ing opened at long range, and
the engagement continued for
three and a -half hours. Three
United States destroyers launched
a torpedo attack, which caused
the enemy to break off the en
gagement and withdraw. The
extent of the damage Inflicted on
the enemy vessels was not defin
itely known, but shell hits were
scored on both Japanese heavy
cruisers and on one light cruiser.
At least one torpedo hit was
scored on the heavy cruiser.
Minor damage was sustained by
the United States vessels, and
casualties among personnel were
extremely light.
