BITTER BATTLE
IN BURMA
Japanese Reverse
CALCUTTA, June 16 (A.A.P.) .
It has been announce- that
during the last week of May
Japanese shock troops suffered
S00 casualties, including a briga
dier and several other officers
killed and a maior-ceneral woun-
ded, in a six-day battle in which
they attempted to occ- -y a
British stronghold in the wild
mountainous country In the Chin
Hills, near Kalemyo, 200 miles
north of Arakan.
The Japanese attacked with
over 10Q0 men before dawn in an
attempt to reach Tlddim, one of
the chief towns In the Chin Hills.
They found the way barred by
some famous Ghurka units, who
were holding the road to the
hills. Fierce hand-to-hand fight
ing ensued, in which the Ghurkas
did magnificent work.
At the end of six days' fight
ing the Japanese casualties were
so heavy that they were unable to
advance further. Instead of con
quering the Chin Hills, they only
just managed to retain a pre
carious hold on one strongpolnt
on the border of the hills.
The Japanese In the battle were
identified as shock troops from
two famous regiments of a crack
division.
