Civil Servants as Fire
Fighters
Stating that he wished to sound a
warning at the end of his term as
Lord Mayor, Sir Frank Beaurepaire
said yesterday that the City 6f Mel
bourne was lacking in adequate fire
protection. Officers of the Metro
politan Fire Brigade had admitted
that the position was that the
brigade's ordinary activities were
based on the assumption of only
three major fires occurring in the city
at once. The suburbs were in a better
position, as they had 4000 auxiliary
firemen.
In London at one stage 4000 fires
broke out almost simultaneously. One
plane could carry 3000 incendiary
bombs, and it was time the authori
ties here woke up. His proposal was
that 1000 State and Federal servants,
who were working in or near the city,
or members of the services, who were
based permanently . in Melbourne,
should be trained as expert fire
fighters. Mr. Kemp had guaranteed
that he could train such men in six
weeks, by four hours' daily practice.
Jn a letter, the Premier, Mr-. Dunstan,
had stated that he intended to bring
the matter before the Prime Minis
ter.
