Fierce Fight
for Kinhwa
LONDON, May 26 : (A.A.P.)
Latest piessages from Chungking
Indicate that Chinese troops, al
though outnumbered, are resisting
the enemy's spearhead invasion army
of 100,000 outside Kinhwa,. In the
Cheklang province, where 5000 Jap
anese are reported to have been
killed. The enemy is driving in from
three sides.
A Chungking spokesman said tire
Japanese had suffered heavy losses
and retreated ' two : miles to the
southward, seven to the east and
eight to the north-west, after an at
tempt to capture Kinhwa. China's
military position, however, was., still
most grave, because of new threats
developing in other areas.
The spokesman explained that the
enemy was concentrating a large
number of .troop transports, war ships
and aircraft carriers at Formosa
Island, across the Taiwan Strait, from
Foochoo. Tlie Japanese were; pro
bably preparing a large-scale Inva
sion of the Fuklen province in the
near future.
The Japanese had also landed ad

: The spokesman emphasised the
need of planes from the Allies, in
view of the fierce battles expected in
the Chektang and Fukicn provinces.
China was- deeply consoled by reports
that the Indian frontiers had / been
greatly strengthened, which was most
valuable for maintaining communi
cations with the Allies.
The spokesman also said Chinese
troops were operating west of the
Salween River, and were now only
two and a half miles from Tengyueh.
Guerillas had severed Japanese com
munications between Tengyueh and
Lung in g.
Tokio Radio, quoting Domel News
Agency, claims that the Japanese
have penetrated the defences one mile
north and north-west of Kinhwa,
and reached the outskirts of the city.
It added: — "The 88th, 67th and 21st
Chinese 'divisions were crushed east
of Kinhwa, while other - forces were
smashed further south. The fleeing
Chinese destroyed all communica
tions west of Kinhwa leading to
Kiangsi."
Kinhwa was heavily battered by
bombings throughout Sunday and
Monday. .
A "Central News" bulletin from the
Cheklang front said that the Japanese
had. launched a full-scale offensive
yesterday in an attempt to storm
Kinhwa,, but they were repulsed, with
bloody losses.
