WASHINGTON, July 15 (A.A.P.).
Tne Navy department discloses that
a Marine Corps aviator, Major Lof
ton Henderson, dived his . blazing:
plane into the smokestack of a Ja-:
panese aircraft carrier during th'e

Henderson led a squadron of scout
bombers in the marines' first attack
against the Japanese fleet. Japanese
fighters swarmed up from the car
rier's decks and Intercepted the
marine squadron, and Henderson's
plane was the first one hit. A marine
gunner said later that the left wing
of Henderson's plane- burst into
flames as he was beginning his final
approach to the carrier. Despite this
he continued the attack.
"I saw him dive down into the
carrier's smokestack," the gunner
added. "I am convinced that it was
deliberate."
