SUBMARINE IN
PERIL
Night-long Vigil
LONDON. Feb. 5 (A.A.P.).
Watchers on the cliffs main
tained a nightlong/ vigil as
the submarine Universal, whose
engines had broken down, drifted
In tempestuous seas along the
rugged Welsh coast. Every sea
was breaking over the conning
tower.
Universal cleared tne ireacner-
ous rocks at Strumble Head and
' entered Cardigan Bay early this
morning. Only one member of
the crew has been rescued. He
was picked up by a Fish Guard
lifeboat when he was washed off
the conning tower.
The destroyer Southampton
yesterday six times attempted to
take , the submarine in tow, but
failed when the rope parted on
.each occasion.
The Aberystwyth lifeboat put to
sea in face, of a 50-m.p.h. gale In
a daring bid to reach the sub
marine, which is now In serious
danger. .
