ATOMIC TESTS
IN AUSTRALIA
"Best Place Tor
Experiments"
LONDON, Feb. 5 (A.A;P.).
From the viewpoint of the
British Empire, the recent dis
covery of uranium in Australia is
the most important news we have
had for a long time," the "Daily
Mail" says in a leading article.
"Ever since the first atomic
bomb was dropped on Hiroshima
we have been exhorting the Go
vernment to do its utmost to pro
mote development of . atomic
energy within the Empire estab
lishment," added the article.
"The experimental station at
Dldcot in our view does not meet
the case. We have always said
exploitation of the new natural
power should be an Imperial task-
not confined to Great Britain.
The Australian discovery rein
forces that opinion. We have
always believed that England is
too. small and too crowded a
country in which to carry out
full-scale atomic experiments.
The dangers of widespread disas
ters In - the event of an accident
in such surroundings are too ob
vious to need emphasis. On the
other hand, there are vast un
populated desert spaces til Aus
tralia. These surely are ideal
settings for atomic experiments.
Australia, therefore, with a vast
store of uranium available, be
comes more and more obviously
the best place for experi
ments."
