Pounding of
Cherbourg
. LONDON. June 26 (A.A.P.).
When Allied battleships and
cruisers joined In the ; attack
against Cherbourg yesterday af
ternoon—probably at a range of
15,000 to 20,000 yards— the Ger
mans Inside the crumbling fort-
ress were again given an awe
some demonstration of Allied
"triphibious" power.
American battleships and
heavy cruisers, supported by two
British cruisers and a strong
force of destroyers, carried out
the onslaught.
The bombardment lasted for
more than three hours, with
German long-range 18-inch bat
teries vigorously returning the
Are. The American force, which
was under the command of Rear
Admiral M. L. Deyo, Included
the battleships Texas, Nevada
and Arkansas; the heavy crui
sers Tuscaloosa and Quincy, with
the British cruisers Glasgow
and Enterprise.
Flotillas of minesweepers went
Rhead clearing a passage for the
ships. As they approached the
harbor the rumble of heavy
gunfire from the great land
battle could be heard.
The Enterprise began firing
from 6-lnch guns, and, then all
the ships joined iriS-a terrific
pounding. The Nevada presented
a .magnificent spectacle as she
sent in salvoes of 14-inch shells
from point-blank range.
All the shore batteries eventu
ally seemed to be put out of ac
tion except for one stubborn
battery south-east of Cherbourg.
The American battleships fired
a final series of broadsides
against the German positions as
they steamed away with their
mission completed.
.While, the naval bombardment
was progressing yesterday Thun
derbolt dive-bombers joined in
the assault against fortifications
and strong points. There are no
further signs of enemy attempts
to evacuate by sea.
