Soldiers Lost
WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 (A.A.P.),
The War department . has an
nounced the sinking of an Allied
troopship : in European waters
with the loss of 1000 American
soldiers. Approximately 1000. men
were rescued. . - - :
The announcement said !' the
ship was lost, at night. The date;
was - not disclosed, because, the
enemy presumably did -riot know
the results of - the attack. The
ship, sank rapidly in . a . heavy
sea.
United Press points, out that It
was the V greatest, ; disaster of its
kind during the war.-- Not a
single American soldier was lost
during the last war through the
sinking of a troopship;
Berlin, Radio , stated that an
Allied troopship carrying; British
and American troops was blown
up between Taranto- and Brin-
disi. . Several hundred "American
troops were killed. The radio did
not specify the date of the sink
ing. .
