New Figures
Australia's chances of winning the 440
yards relay race for men was marred
b.v a bad pass to Yates, who ran the
final 110 yards. At that stage there was
little between the teams. - The Cana
dians had gained a few - feet advantage
in the first 220 yards, and this was
maintained to the finish, tho winning
margin from , England being two yards.
The Empire Games and Australian re
cord time of 41 3-5 sec. was estab
lished:
.Another Australian and Empire Games
record was created when tho favorite. D.
i . Shore, . of South Africa, won - the first
.heat of the 440 yards from J. Mumford
f Australia), and J. Orr (Canada), in the
time of 47 0-10 seconds. -The other
heats were not run in such fast time, but
they provided exciting finishes . for the
speeta;ors, who- packed the stands. To
, Canada went the second heat. J. Frascr
finishing with half a yard to spare over
the New Zealander H. Tyrie. who was
five yards ahead of the Australian
Jones.
. .Roberts, of England, cleared away in
the third heat to win by tho good mnr-
Rln of six yards from Fritz, of Canada,
and Sayers. of New Zealand.
R. Hlggins. the Canadian javelin
thrower, upheld her reputation as a
ehamnlcn in tho womens javelin event
when she took the title with a throw
of 125 feet 7'/, inches. Hlggins was
always considered favorite for this event
and her effort was well up to the per
formances she had registered prior t<
her selection in the Canadian team. A
H. Robertson, of South Africa, was Mis;
Higgins's most difficult opponent,' anc
was second with 121 feet 4 inches. Thi:
was not Miss Robertson's best athletic
performance, as she has repeatedly dur
ing training hurled the javelin furthei
than the winner's effort. Tho formei
holder, Lunn. of England, was unable
lo repeat her International form, anc
her throw of 119 feet 8</2 Inches only
secured for her third place. Lunn has
definitely decided to retire from competi
tive athletics on her return to England
Another team mate, Miss K. Stokes, ha;
also made this decision. The throws ol
the placegetters exceeded by far the Em:
pirc record of 105 feet 7% inches, for
merly held by Miss Lunn.
