There ia a very serious drought iu
western Europe. The rivers of France
and Belgium arc lower than they have
been for 50 years, and crops are suffering
so severely 'that disaster threatens, fit
some districts water for domestic uses and
for cat'tle is being carried for miles. The
mountain torrents in Switzrcland are noc
one third of their usual volume, and many
slopes are bare of snow.
The drought in Great Britain is now
SG days old, though there has been occa
sional light rainstorms in some districts.
The general record of heat and drought
eclipses alii recent droughts, such as in
1911, lasting for 24 days, and in 189S, lasting
for 30 days. Many holiday makers instead
of walking in the daytime are tramping
throughout 'the night 'to avoid the heat.
