QUEENSLAND.
THE POLICE FORCE.
BRISBANE. — Calls for police activities
and the exigencies of the sen-ice, coupled
with generous provision for loovc, now ren
der the difficulties of administering the
police force with the present numerical es-
tablishment much more appreciable than
hitherto. These remarks are contained in
the annual report of the Commissioner of
Police, which was tabled in the Assembly
on Tuesday. The criminal statistics show
that the number of persons taken into cus
tody during the year was 2I,0SG, and 1302
persons appeared on police summons, mak
ing a total of 22,388, comprising 20,721 mules
and 1067 females. Dealing with gamb
ling, the report states that action had been
taken witli considerable success to prevent
a further spread of street betting in Bris
bane and in outside places. The police
had been active in attempt® lo prevent iile-
gal gambling. While it appeared to be im
possible to completely eliminate the .ten
dency to gamble from the community, the
commissioner hoped to eradicate it from
public places, and from places where the
absence of publicity and supervision gave
opportunity for the introduction of unde
sirable elements and practices quite apart
from gambling.
