CARNIVAL'S
TRIUMPH
Way is open to bigger'victories . . •
A march of 10,000 through Sydney streets on
Sunday followed by a rally of 30,000 in the Domain,
brought the Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship
to a triumphant climax.
T
HE marchers knew that their
r j r • j l •
songs of peace and friendship
would resound throughout the
world, telling millions of a new
and mighty victory in the worldwide
struggle against war.
As the.Carnival flag was lowered
from the masthead, thousands among
the watchers remembered the boast
of Menzies' Immigration Minister
Holt, quoted in the Herald of Jatiu
ary 25, last:
"The Government will do everything
in its power to prevent the
Communist - sponsored Youth Carnival
of Peace and Friendship from
being held in Australia."
(."Communist," of course, is Holt's
rough and ready description of all
non-supporters of his fascist idealogy
and covers such citizens as
Dame Mary Gilmore, Professor Wal-
ter Murdoch Hephzibah Menuhin,
William Hatfield and other suppoVL
ers of the Carnival.]
People's answer
Here is how the people answered
Holt, Menzies and their Wall Street
Masters, the enemies and mass-murderers
of the world's youth:
# One hundred and fifty-six
major sporting and cultural func-
tions were held during the Carnival.
# There was an over-all attendance
at these of no less than 25,600
people (exclusive of the tens of
thousands at the opening and closing
marches and rallies.)
# There were 1,544 participants
in the sporting, and over 1,000 entries
in the cultural contests.
Holt did his best (or worst); his
"everything in our power" included
a reign of terror by the secret police
resulting in banntngs, censorings,
Carnival-eve cancellations of
halls and grounds, - provocations
and brutal assaults on delegates.
Holt's only trouble was that the
Australian people did everything in
their mighty power to bring his
plans down in ludicrous frustration
and carry the Carnival forward to
its triumph.
Commenting on Sunday's march
the General Secretary of the Communist
Party of Australia. Mr.
Sharkey, said: "To-day the O'Deas,
the Ryans, the Menzies and whole
gang are licking their wounds. Un.
doubtedly it was very galling to
them."
Mr. Sharkey said that the peace
forces had won a great victory in
driving back the forces fif reaction,
in "defeating all the efforts of their
half-fascised police-state."
Better to come!
As the message of Peace and
Friendship (now household words m
Sydney) is carried to every part of
Australia and New Zealand by returning
delegates, the victorious
Carnival organisers and their thousands
of devoted helpers can be certain
of these facts:
On the basis of this success they
can go forward to still mightier
ones; they can mobilise not merely
thousands, but millions, for the
struggle against war!
A few more such blows at the warmongers.
struck with increasing
srength. and the era of world-wide
peace and friendship, for which all
true Australians ardentlv long, will
become not a dream, but a glorious
reality!
