VENTERSBURG ENGAGEMENT,
SIXTY BOERS CAPTURED.

GARRISON AT BLOEMFONTEIN
Details which have been received in
connection with the expulsion of the
Boers from Ventersbarg by General
Hunter show that the wpoded -kopje
occupied by the enemy was partly sur-
rounded by the British buring night.
At; dawi% the Boers, who numbered
200, poured a fire on the 39th Battery
of the Royal Field Artillery at a range
of 500 yards, killing Major J. Hanwell,
in command <4 the battery. The gun
was jambed, and was rendered temporarily
useless. . -
The Sussex Regiment stormed the
kopje and the Boers fled, 60 of the enemy
being captured. The British burnt several
farms in'the vicinity, and a number
of families at Ventersbarg have been dispatched
to a distance.
It has been decided to keep a permanent
garrison of 7,000 men at Bloemfontein
and a site is being selected for the
barracks.
