Polio Isolates
Migrant Camp
Following outbreaks of poliomyelitis, all
children at Mildura migrant centre have
been quarantined and Junee municipal
baths have been closed.
Three cases have been re-
ported from the Mildura camp
in the past few weeks and
there have been other suspect
cases. Those with the disease
are now in Mildura Base Hos-
pital.
Children under 16 have
been confined to the camp
and the camp's picture thea-
tre has been closed. Social
gatherings, or any other
functions where migrants
congregate, have been ban-
ned.
Children from the camp,
who normally attend schools
in Mildura, are being kept at
the camp.
Quarantine has been order-
ed by the Commonwealth
health authorities. The camp
is Commonwealth territory.
There are about 500 children
at the camp, which is a hold-
ing centre adjoining Mildura
aerodrome.
The camp's medical officer
(Dr. J. J. Connolly) says that
all possible measures are be
ing taken to prevent the
disease spreading. This is
difficult because the residents
all live in a comparatively con-
fined area.
Mothers at the camp say the
disease could be spread by flies
from a nearby rubbish dump,
but camp officials claim that
only dry rubbish is placed on
the dump,
Precautionary sprayings of
the dump have been carried
out and rubbish has been cov-
ered in by bulldozers.
Pool Closed
Because municipal authori-
ties and local doctors suspect
that Junce swimming baths
could attract polio contacts to
this town, the council has de-
cided to close the Olympic
swimming baths prematurely
as from today.
This action has been taken
after medical men have failed
to find the cause of the in-
fection of two youngsters, aged
eight and three, who con-
tracted polio.
These represented the second
and third local cases.
Large numbers of Wagga
people have been swimming in
the pool each 'week end. Seven
Wagga buses waited near the
enclosure last week end and
there were probably 300 Wagga
people inside.
