UNITY IN THE
i COMMONS
Increased Pay
for Members

london,' May 30.
Shoulder -to shoulder, members
of the British House of Commons
of all parties marched together
to vote themselves : a rise in pay
from- £600 to £1000. This was
the- first occasion that the present
Parliament had .voted together
on a free vote.
- There 'were -26 dissentients,- one
of whom commented, -."What: will
the poor, pensioners think , with
their tiny: Incomes , when they
read that the Minister , for': Pen
sions; has voted himself an in
creased salary ?" ,
The majority . of ' members
agreed that it was - almost im
possible to live on: £600 a/year
and . carry out ' their family and
constituency responsibilities. Re
cently. . demobolised a member of
'the Commons declared that . he
was forced to sell his house, to
meet Parliamentary , expenses,
while, another admitted that he
had - borrowed from' his father : to
make ends meet,
a third member said that lie
lived "in a- curious place in the
Euston-road" at a cost of 5/6 a
night, In order to 'economise.
Others pointed out that the days
when most of the members of the
House of Commons had private
means were long gone, while liv
ing costs had risen steeply.
