McKenley Wins Footscray
Gift With Throw at Tape
By Bruce Welch
Herb McKenley staged a magnificent finish to win the
Footscray Gift from scratch last night.
McKenley ran five yards
inside even time to win nar
rowly with a desperate throw
for the tape.
He -was competing in his
eighth successive Gift final.
The Jamaican won the
Warrnambool Gift last
month.
McKenley was followed
home by Geelong footballer
Bert Worner and Eric
Gardiner.
Gerald Hutchinson won
the Australian professional
100 yards championship,
and now seems certain to
take the all-round cham
pionship when it ends at
Traralgon today.
The 23-year-old Brighton
runner sprinted impressively,
and defeated South' Aus
tralian Keith Alston by a
foot.
He ran the 100 yards in
10 seconds dead against a
cold head wind.
With only the 75 yards
title to be run today, the
points position in the cham
pionshlp series is: Hutchin-
son and Aiston, 7 pts; Frank
Banner (N.S.W.), 5 pts.;
Sam Baldwin (N.S.W.), 3V4
pts.; and J. R. Stringer
(Vic.), 1% pts.
The defending cham-
: pion, Banner, did not start
last night. He broke down
with a leg injury at Kyne-
ton last Monday and will
not contest today's title.
However, Banner may still
be included in the field for
the world championships
which start at Geelong next-
Friday night. «
