Men Hold Mass
Meetings To-dav
Mass meetings of tram men to
be held to-day at Malvern and
Hanna-street depots will protest
' against the .Tramways Board de
cision to work the -40-hour week
over six days.
The Tramway Employes' Asso
ciation is threatening direct ac
tion if the men are not put on
five-day rosters. , .
The association- secretary (Mr.
C. L. O'Shea) will address to
day's- meetings at. Malvern this
morning and Hanna-street in the
afternoon. He said-last night the
meetings would not Interfere with
tram services. ' .
Replying to a statement by the
chairman of the board (Mr. H.
K. Bell), that. a five-day week in
the tramways- .was v impossible,
Mr. O'Shea said employes were
on five-day rosters In New Zea
land and Newcastle: Five-day
rosters were also -expected In
Sydney soon. . .
Mr. O'Shea said Mr. Bell's
estimate that 844 extra . men
would be -needed for a five-day
40-hour, Week was "Inflated."
When hours were . reduced from
48 to 44 in 1938, the board , had
said 217 more men would be re
quired, but . the actual increase
was only 55.
