National Outlook
After all, and much - as it
accomplishes, this constitution is
but the framework and ground
plan of. a nation that. Is to be."
This statement; made by Alfred'
Deakin after the Federal Consti
tution had been passed, was
quoted by Mr. Gray, M.L.A. , at
a debate in the Rfngwood town
hall. . - i : , i
Mr. Gray said to-day Austra
lia was the nation Deakin could
foresee in 1898. They had to
be big enough Australians to say
when they voted, "I am not a
Victorian: I am an Australian."
'Mr. Hollins, M.L.A., taking the
negative viewpoint, said there
were two main reasons why a
"No" vote should be recorded.
One was that if the powers were
granted, freedom would be de
stroyed. The second was that the
Federal Government already had
sufficient power for post-war re-
constructlon.
