PUBLIC APPEALS
Where Restriction will
Apply v
After further "consideration the
Patriotic Funds Council agreed to
the . modified, proposal of the
Federal " Treasurer that substan-
tial patriotic , appeals ..should be
suspended for iseven weeks during
the next war loan' campaign, Sep
tember. 12 to October 31, and for
eight weeks- covering the -fol
lowing. ' loan period, Including
Easter.
The chairman of the council
(Mr. Martin, M.L.A.) said It had
again been . decided to express to
the Federal Treasurer the;, coun
cil's strong view that special con
sideration should, be given to re
cognised annual appeals usually
held at these periods of the year,
and -that if restrictive action was
to be taken . it should apply in all
States. The Federal authority ex
plained that the restriction would
not. affect weekly or monthly col
lection of subscriptions to patri
otic or charitable funds.
Mr. Martin added that in Vic
toria the prohibition would apply
only to public appeals in Mel
bourne, Ballarat, Geelong and
Bendigo. Extended appeals for
patriotic funds in suburban areas
would also be affected, but not
niinor efforts such as fetes,
dances, regular street days and
one-day carnivals and gym
khanas.
