INTER-STATE PHONES.
Increased Trunk Line
Business.
MORE CHANNELS LIKELY.
The increase in the intor-St-.ic trunk
lino telephone business in the last ten
years was yesterday the subject of a
statement by the Postmaster-General's
department. In that period the number
'ot colls completed over the Sydney-Mel
bourne trunk lines increased troiu '
114.200 to 285,000 annually, whlic on the
Sydney-Brisbane lines the yearly trans
actions grew from 41.300 to 139,000. On
the Melbourne-Adelaide group the in
crease had been from 41,000 tc 119.000,
Tlie close telephone "relations" between
Tasmania and the mainland States was
illustrated by the fact that since the
service was opened 44,355 calls had oeon
connected. Despite the distance between
Adclnide and Perth, the one connecting
trunk line carried 12,800 calls annually!
The rapid development of business had
necessitated substantial additions to
plant, and in order to keep pace with
the growth further channels will bo
provided ns required.
Delay was at present experienced on
calls between Sydney, and Melbourne
sometimes during the day when business
was at its peak. This was more notice
able now just because of the stimulus
given to the traffic by the Spring racing
1 carnival. The department had alreadv
taken steps to meet the position, and
three additional channels would be in
stalled early in the coming vear, thus
increasing the total number "to fifteen.
If the rapid development which had
taken place in recent months was main
tained, three further channels would pos
sibly bo required during 1937. Tills
matter wns being closely watched.
It would soon be necessary to a.'lord
relief also on tho Sydney-Brisbane route,
where seven channels were in service,
niid the present indications pointed to
the installation of three additional chan
nels during 1937. In these cases -tlie
new channels would he afforded bv in
stalling telephone carrier wave .systems,
by which the additional circuits were
secured without tho need for crcctiw
wires. "
