Torch Ceremony
Symbol of Unity
PORTSMOUTH, Sept; 13

A torch which will be car
ried from Porthmouth to Eind
hoven, Holland, was lit to-day
by Field Marshal Lord ' Mont
gomery.
Lord Montgomery said the
ceremony of carrying the flame
was a symbol of unity among
Holland, France, Belgium .and
Britain.
"Little did we think four
years after defeating our ene
mies Ave would still be living
In an atmosphere of inter
national uncertainty and dis
trust," he said. -
"Let us be strong in the re
solve to stand firmly for free
dom and justice in an un
settled world. We must be
united and determined to fight
aggression in whatever form ;it
may appear."
The ceremony of carrying
the torch was inaugurated in
1946 through the initiative of
the mayors of Eindhoven and
Bayeux. The torch will be
taken in a war ship from Bri
tain to Normandy and handed
to couriers from Eindhoven at
Bayeux.
