Demarcation Poser
for Mr. Kent Hughes
CANBERRA, Thursday. -- A - pretty
problem in the demarcation category
awaits, solution by the Minister for the
Interior (Mr. Kent Hughes). :
It relates to the ques
tion of who should
water the shrubs in tubs
on the verandah of the
Hotel Kurrajong,. where
most members of Par
liament stay when .In
Canberra...
Senator -Henty (Lib., Tas.)
raised the problem In the Sen
ate today/
He said- that each morning
an employe of the Department
of the Interior hosed down the
verandahs of the hotel, but
the .shrubs In tubs there were
dying for want of water.
"Apparently the shrubs are
under the jurisdiction of the
Department of Parks and Gar
dens, and therefore may not
be watered by the employe of
the Department of the In
terior.' he said.
"Will the Minister make re
presentations to the approp-
prlnle trade union 'to, obtain
permission for the' employe to
hose the shrubs when neces
sary. without lbss of status. to
him under/the union rules/ -
"Or will the Minister explore
the possibility of a mixed-
functions clause being added
to the award, so the employe
may water the shrubs;
"Alternatively, could .the em
ploye be transferred to -the De
partment of Parks and Gar
dens for five minutes1 twice a
week whilst he hoses them.
"If these,, suggestions prove
unworkable! would the Minis
ter see that the shrubs, when
finally : dead,. are embalmed In
red tape rand suitably buried,
so that , they will not, feel out
of' place in the Hereafter."
The Leader of the Govern- -
ment in the Senate (Benator "
O'Sulllvan) said he would re
fer the question to Mr. Kent
Hughes when next he' saw
him.- ...
