Some Prices Down
for Christmas
"The Prices Commissioner (Mr. Wal-
droit ) gave an unexpected and welcome
Christmas present to Victorian housewives
yesterday when he ordered reductions in
the prices of five grocery lines.
His greatest pfide'eut was for
an item that is to most house
wives a cooking "must"; for the
festive season — desiccated coco-
niit.
' The price was reduced by
38 per cent., from 3/6 to 2/2
a lb.
Another seasonal reduction
was i ordered for Mary Baker
Ice Cream Mix, which was re
duced in price, by lVad. a 1-lb.
tin.
- Danish blue cheese, Dana
brand, was reduced from 7/
to 6/8 a lb.
The other reductions covered
Bourneville cocoa (from 2/1 to
2/ an 8-oz. packet) ' arid' Oad-
bury's drinking chocolate
(from 1/8 to 1/7 an . 8-oz.
packet).
The reductions were con
tained in an order . fixing
. T:
maximum retail prices for a
number of grocery lines re
cently recontrolled, including
coffees, .pickles, chutney and
tinned vegetables.
Mr. Waldron was not avail
able last night to say whether
the reductions were part of a
general trend or merely a
temporary change. '
Another order issued by Mr.
Waldron yesterday fixed maxi
mum prices for adhesive ban
dages and plasters, cotton ban
dages, cotton wool, baby pow
der, creams and jtolletries.
