HOPES FOR STRIKE
SETTLEMENT
Union Proposals Put
Before B.H.P.
RE-REGISTRATION THE
VITAL ISSUE
Brighter prospects now exist for a settlement of the in-
dnstrial upheaval in N.S.W.
At a conference between 'representatives /of- fKe: Broken'
Hill Pty. Co: Ltd. and union rep resenfatives- yesterday /attempts
were made by the unions to gain an understanding that the
company would not impede the granting of 're-registration to
the Iron .Workers' Association.
, , At the conclusion of rhc talks Mr,- Essington . Lewis, representing
the company, agreed to bring certain Union proposals before his di
rectors. Should these be accepted the way will be paved for an early
settlement of the strike.
The company's decision, it is anticipated,
should be available to-day in time for the
Federal Minister for Labor (Mr. Holloway) to
communicate with the A.C.T.U. executive in
Sydney this afternoon.-

that following the A.C.T.U.
meeting to-day the A.C.T.U.
will meet representatives of the
toal miners, seamen and iron
workers in Sydney with recom
mendations for settlement
moves.
Yesterday was the firsts time
since the iron workers at Port'
Kembla gave the start to the
pi esent situation by refusing to
work; as a . protest against the
dismissal of a. shop steward, that
official contatt had - been made
by ,.the representatives of the
Labor movement; with the em
ployers, the B.H.P. Co.- Ltd.
Yesterday's conference at the
offices- of;; the B.H.P: Co. . Ltd. was
ottended by Mr. Holloway, the
N.S.W, Minister for Labor (Mr;
Knight), the president of. the.
A.C.T.U. (Mr. Clarey, M.L C ,
..who; Is also Victorian Minister for
Labor) ; ; the president - (Mr. G.
Anderson) and the secretary (Mr.
F. Kelly),- of the N.S.W. Trades
;and -LaboriCouncil: -
-..-.The company wns represented
by the chief ; general manager
(Mr. Essington Lewis), and the
secretary: (Mr. R. G.: Newton) .
The talks lasted for two hours,
following which the Labor repre
sentatives conferred in Mr. Hol
loway 's office for -over an hour.
Messrs. Clarey, Kelly and Ander
son will leave by air for Sydnev
this morning.
