HANGMAN OF
DACHAU
"Soul Morally
Ruined"
LONDON, Dec. 6 (A.A.P.).
Emil Mahl, hangman at the
Dachau camp, who, in a written
statement, said he was concerned
with between 800 and 1000 executions,
cried out at the trial today:-
''Morally, my soul is
ruined by what I had to do.:
Mahl also, said that his life
would have been forfeit if he had
shown even in his eyes that he
hated his job. He added:- "This
is the first time that I have been
able to speak freely for five
years." He described how he had
stoked up the crematorium furnaces
with thousands of corpses,
which came in at the rate of 150
to 200 a day in the latter part of
1944 and early in 1945, and were
piled up to the ceiling in every
room.
A British brigade-major and a
woman Red Cross official are
missing, and are believed to have
been kidnapped at Padang, a
port on the west coast of Sumatra.
A British statement said
that strong representations had
been made to the Indonesian
authorities.
