DISTURBANCES
IN CALCUTTA
Police Fire on
Rioters
CALCUTTA, Nov! 22 (A.A.P.).
The police opened fire twice at
five-minute intervals to-day when
a large crowd, demonstrating in
tavor of the pro-Japanese Indian
army, reassembled in the Dha-
rnmtolla district. One person was
killed and- eight were, injured.
All public transport ceased
when the demonstrators dragged
occupants from trams, buses and
rickshaws. Shops in .the main
business sections" were closed.
At Bhownnlpore, where three
people were (njured, six military
lorries were set on fire to-day -by
the demonstrators.
Calcutta transport workers and
Indian girl -students joined in the
demonstrations. -
A: thousand students who squat
ted throughout the night in the
road because the police forbade
their procession , and mnrch to
the Government offices agreed Lo
change the route after personal
appeals by Mr. R. G. Casey, who
recently resigned as Governor of
Bengal, and Chandra Bosc's bro
ther.
The crowd dispersed on Wed
nesday after the police opened
fire, but reassembled- later and
spent the night in the middle of
the road.
