DEARER MEALS.
Decision By Cafe Proprietors
It was, nnnotRiccd yesterday by tho
secretary of tho Cafe and Caterers' As
sociation, Mr. E. H, Munday, that as a
result of a general Increase which had
taken place in the prices of foodstuffs
and in the wages of cafe employes it
had boon decided to Increase tho prices
of meals In Melbourne cafes. Tills de
cision had been reached at a meeting of
cafe proprietors of the city and suburbs
held at tho rooms of the association in
Nicholas -Building, Swanston-stroet.
It was mentioned at the meeting that
working expenses at cafes had increased
considerably during ' the past threo years.
There had been three Increases In wages
In that period, and rents also lmd been
raised. In' tho past year tho price or
flour had risen from £0 7/6 to £14 7/6
a ton, bread- had gone up from fld. to
lO'/fed. a loaf, and other costs also had
Increased substantially; with the result
that cafo proprietors were not securing
a rcaronablo return from present prices
charged for meals. Tho' Increased prices
would come Into effect almost im
mediately. ,
