IVANHOE'S FIRST DEFEAT.
OLD SCOTCH WINS.
AMATEUR OPENING.
Chandler, 15 Goals.
After having passed through tho three
lower sections of tho Victorian Amateur
Football Association in successive years
without having suffered defeat, Ivanhoe
club lost to Old Scotch Collegians' team
in its first A section match in'thc opening
round Of matches of the Association on
Saturday. It was a memorable event In
amateur football history, and it showed
that the standard of football in the A
section was far better than that of the
ether grades.
Ivanhoe hnil a strouR representative side
available, whilst Old Scotch fielded several
recruits nnd players, who woro not available
last year. in tho clrcumBtancrs, It was
«i great victory for the Old Scotch Club,
which dofcutcd Ivanhoe In that club's 61st
game In'thc competition. Orntoml tho other
team rnlacd from the B section performed
creditably nnd from the form shown against
Teachers' College it was clear that the team
would acquit Itself well against the other
clubs. Last year's premiers Collegians, had
a great win at Geelong. Gilleapie-Jones, who
suffered a leg Injury last year whilst train-
ins with Melbourne, played in the match nnd
did creditably. It is possible that he will
remain in amateur football, lie Is being
sought by several League clubs, but his leg
trouble la likely to dampen the spirits of
many bidders for his services. The risk of a
recurrence of the trouble, and the expense
which would follow, has decreased the en
thusiasm of clubs seeking his services.
In Hie lower sections, clubs which moved
Into the higher grades did remarkably well,
and In every case, they won their contests.
In many of the matches the scoring was ex
ceptionally high, and the forwards kicked
with groat accuracy to finish the day with ex
cellent individual efforts.
"Dick" Chandler tho State Saving Bank
forward was outstanding, nnd kicked 15 goals
for the match. It Ik his best first-match effort in|
his long football career in the amateurs. Boyd-
Gcmley kicked 12 goals for Melbourne II, S.
Old Boys. Plunkctt Coburg) kicked 10 goaJs
In the C Section. The previous year, his club
had been in the lower grade. Ills perform
ance was most creditable.
K. Irvine (Myor's) sustained concussion
when he fell heavily in the pack after hav
ing attempted to murk. lie received a kick
on the head and waa sent away to hospital
for treatment. I
Attendances at many of thn matches were
exceptionally good. At Ivanhoe 2000 people
witnessed the home aides defeat hy Old
Scotch, whilst a further 2000 spectators wit
nessed the Ormond-Tcachers' College encoun
ter at Ormnnd, Ormorni has mi exceedingly
fine following, nnd should the. cluh meet wltn
a measure of success In the grade tho club
should derive much financial benefit; from the
gates.
A Section.
OLD SCOTCH COLLEGIANS, went to
Ivanhoe, and thn players were - confronted
with nn exceptionally stiff task. it waa the
find appearance of IVANHOE In the section,
nnd the match was generally referred to as
Ivnnhoc'H test. With a fine record of 00
successive wins, Ivanhoe players look the
field confidently, whilst tho great ' majority
of the 2000 spectators considered their chances
of victory to ho better than those ot Old
Scotch. Poor kicking for goals hindered
Ivanhoe form the first quarter. Tho spec
tators and Ivanhoe players were amazed with
tlio ability of Bill Pearson, tho celebrated
Old Scotch forward. He marked brilliantly
and kicked nevcru! beautiful goals from far
out. At the other end of tho ground Smith
was not comfortable, due to luck of train
ing and tho .strength of tho Old Scotch de
fence. Coutts played very solidly nt full
back. » Ivanhoe was stronger in tho centre
than Old Scotch, and Walker worked the
hull into position attractively, but ho re
ceived poor support from the attack. Much
of his work was ineffective, due to the for
wards' InconHlKtcncicB. In tho third quarter
ivnnhoo improved, but Inaccuracy up forward
kept tho team from overcoming a big defi
ciency. The team attacked for the greater
part of the term, but from five consecutive
shots points only resulted. Scores:—

Kicking for goal was accurate throughout.
Two new forwards in Bishop (T.C.), wllhl

STATE SAVINGS BANK was far too
clever for OLD MELBURNIANS at Mel
bourne Grammar School. Old Mclburniann
side was weakened by the abscnco of soveral
old players. Savings Bank played well,
whilst the co-opcrutlon of the forwards waa
remarkably good. The players were unsel
fish and always looked out for the snaro
mnn In preference to shooting at random.
In the last quarter the team added nlno
goals. Kendall (centre) returned to the side

UNIVERSITY BLACKS dirt not meet with
much opposition from ELSTERNWICK, at
the University. The game wan played nt
a fast pace, nnd It was onlv tho weakness
of the F.lnteinwlck forwards which causod the
scores to be so wide apart. Tim Blacks'
defcnco .was exceptionally good. Tho El-
stcrnwlck forwards were covered so effectively
that they hurried their shooting for goal
badly. Towards the close of the match El-
siernwick was disorganised owing to the fact
that five players had to be relieved because
of minor troubles, as weak ankles, cramp
and bruises, Final scores: —
